Submitted by bioskeptic on Mon, 12/06/2010 - 05:01NASA recently announced the discovery of a species of bacteria capable of incorporating arsenic in place of phosphorus. This is really cool, but the story has become popular for the wrong reasons.
Phosphorus is an important element for life because it is integral to the formation of a number of structure necessary for life, DNA for example. Arsenic is only one row down on the periodic table and shares many chemical properties with phosphorus.
Feeling the Future: Things that bother me about the Cornell "Psi" study

(A roughly 53% hit rate,compared to the expected hit rate of 50%.)
First, this study has yet to be repeated. As in all science, new discoveries require independent verification before they can be considered true.'
